Greetings from the humble scribe Merouda Pendray.
I was shopping the other day when I thought about food
at events. Now, we all like to eat, but when we are
going to events, we sometimes don't think about our
food. Usually, when I do see travelling lunches or the
(rarer and rarer) off-board diner, I note that the
food is pretty similar.. summer sausage, cheese,
grapes and apples... Things that are easy to bring,
blend in, and are probably period. But there is
actually a pretty wide range of foods in the grocer's
that will at least work as "foods your persona would
recognize" even if he/she wouldn't recognize the
preperation or some of the ingrediants in the prep.
So I want to throw out a little challenege/game to
everyone. When you go food shopping next time, think
about the foods you are buying in terms of what your
persona would have been able to eat, and then
construct youself a menu for a travelling lunch. The
travelling lunch is important for many of us, not only
because of a wish to experience something closer to
our personas, but also because a lot of us have food
allergies. My allergy, eggs, is so problematic (in
terms of the ubiquitous use thereof) that as I get
older, I am less able and less able to eat foods
provided by the group simply because I never know what
the cumulative egg total in the menu is.
Anyway, here are the limits: your menu can not include
potatoes, tomatoes, turkey, corn, chocolate candies,
et cetera. Some of these new world food stuffs were
eaten very late in period in specific places, but the
majority of us are not from those places and times.
This eliminates things like canned beef stew, as well,
not because it's canned, but because it has potatoes
and tomatoes. If you choose to include selections from
the prepared foods at the Deli, be aware that
mayonaise was not available until the 18th c, so you
might want to be sure your selcetions are oil-dressed
rather than mayo-dressed.
Secondly, try to look for foods that are already
prepared--the idea is to make this as simple as
possible so that someoone who doesn't like to cook can
have as pleasant a meal as someone who does. And hey,
it lets you pretend you have a cook!
I'll happily start:
Rotissaire chicken
Split pea soup (Condensed, so that it's like Peasen)
Cucumbers
Dates
Almonds
Ry-Krisp
Mozzerella balls in oil
Apple Cider
Please play along with me! I'm very interested in what
other people will observe as appropriate for their
personas.
Have a good morning,
Merouda
